O'Neal, Broncos Bring Chiefs Back To Reality

by Frank Pagnotti

Deltha O'Neal entered week four as an unknown cornerback in the Denver Broncos secondary. Thanks to Kansas City Chiefs QB Trent Green, he is now in the record books.

O'Neal picked off Green four times to lead the Denver Broncos to a 20-6 victory over the Chiefs at Invesco Field on Sunday. O'Neal's four interceptions tied an NFL record which is also held by 17 other players. The loss pushes the Kansas City to 1-3 on the season, while the Broncos move into a tie for a first place in the AFC west with a record of 3-1.

The loss brought the Chiefs offense back to reality after their accumulating 547 yards of offense against the Redskins last week. Last week's hero Priest Holmes had just 42 yards on 17 carries.

While the offense went without a touchdown for the second time in four games, the defense played fairly well against the Broncos wide-open passing attack. Former Denver defensive coordinator Greg Robinson managed to hold QB Brian Griese to just 121 yards passing and one touchdown. However, he forgot to game plan for RB Mike Anderson. The 2000 rookie of the year ran through Robinson's for 155 yards on 22 carries.

TE Tony Gonzalez and K Todd Peterson turned out to be the only bright spots for the Al Saunders led Chiefs offense. Gonzalez continued his trend of his big games against Denver. The all-pro caught 8 balls for 129 yards. Peterson put the only points on the board with field goals of 23 and 35 yards.

The loss snapped the Chiefs four-game winning streak against the Broncos.
